What to do if you have a grease fire

Written by Lisa on March 8, 2008 – 11:24 am -

I actually got this video in an email. This is a topic that I really never thought about all that much. I’ve never had a grease fire, but I know the effects can be devastating. This video will take a little over 30 seconds of your time and could save you and your house if you ever had a grease fire.

The water, being heavier than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite. This is a powerful message—-watch the video and don’t forget what you see. Tell your whole family about this video. Or better yet, send this to them.

I did not know that one! I was always able to get it out by just covering the pan. But I can see that it works better that way. I agree…never throw water on a fire! WOW! Thank you for this! Informative and frightening!

  2. Lisa Says:

I too knew not to throw water on the pot. I never really knew why though. I agree . . . very scary video, but one I’ll never forget!

    SCARY!! Good to know.

I had a grease fire once in the broiler but thankfully I have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. It’s a good thing too because I didn’t know that water could make it spread like that. Good video.

[...] Lisa shared a recipe for Slow Cooker Roast. She uses instant pudding. Lisa recently wrote on how to put out a grease fire, and why you shouldn’t use water. [...]

good tips. my grandpa was fire chief, so we were schooled on stuff like that from the time we could walk.

I keep fire extinguishers in both of my kitchens. I may know what to do, but will the kids or someone else? The fire extinguisher is red and easy to work. With 7 kids, they help to give me peace of mind…

I’ve never had one either but this is good information!

I’m curious though, how come you just didn’t embed the video into your post so we don’t leave your site?

    Just a suggestion…

It actually was embedded. Thanks for letting me know. I fixed it! (now to figure out why it unembedded itself)

I need this video for a CERT class and when I downloaded it from Lisa’s sight, my reader said that it had an attachment and then sounded like a meat grinder. Any suggestions?

Very interesting. I remember learning not to throw water on a flaming pan, but never knew why.
