The dry brown patches on an apple are called scald.  They don’t usually affect the flavor or quality.

    Are they caused by leaves sticking to the apple skin as it’s growing?
    My gran used to grow several types of apple and they were sometimes quite odd shapes, not like the perfect globes we tend to get these days.
