Butter cookie dough needs to be chilled to be firm enough for easy cutting.  This is due to its high fat content.

Lightly flour the rolling pin and cookie cutters before rolling and cutting dough to prevent the dough from sticking to them.

Using a serrated knife to cut the dough helps cookies retain a round shape.  Chill dough if it becomes too soft.
